The modern Croatian is the result of more than 900 years of literature, a mixture of Ecumenic Croatian and Lay Croation; the former was abandoned at the middle of the XIVth century.

At the beginning of the XXth century, the Croatian merged with the Serbian and very many writers opposed to this thing. After the fall of communism, the situation of the Croatian language stabilized. Released by the political pressure, the Croatian underwent a process of recroatization.
