Romanian General

The Romanian language is a Romanic language spoken by approximately 28 million people all over the world, most of them in Romania and in the Republic of Moldova.

The Romanian territory was inhabited by dacians who were speaking an Indo - European language but which we know little about. There are a few words left in Romanian and Albanian, most of them being connected to the pastoral life.

Another theory says that the Dacians language was so close to the Romanian language that the differences were hardly visible.

After the Roman conquest, Dacia was transformed into a Roman province and Vulgar Latin became the official language.

Due to the geographic isolation, Romanian was probably the only language that has not been influenced by other Romanic languages so that the Romanian grammar is almost similar to the Latin grammar.

All the dialects united till the centuries VII – X before the Slavonic languages interfered with the Romanian language.

Most words of the Romanian vocabulary are of Latin origin but the language also contains Slavonic words or more recently borrowed words (from French, Turkish, Italian, German, Hungarian).

Romanian has four dialects:

  • daco - roman (north of the Danube)
  • aroman (Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia)
  • megleno - roman (north of Greece)
  • istro - roman (Istria and Croatia)
